Read and discuss the story "The Slug and the Snail by author" by Oein DeBhairdu

Talk and Discussion:

  • Revise the book.
  • Discuss how the slug and the snail loved to travel far and wide.

I wonder:

  • What does a snail, a slug or a crow sound like?

Video:

  • Watch the video on what a slug, a snail or a crow sound like.
  • Were these sounds surprising to the children, why?

Group Work / Pair Work/ Class:

  • Ask the children (in pairs or groups) to create a sound similar to what they heard.
  • One group could work on the sound of a slug while the other on the sound of a snail or a crow.
  • Can the children use their voice to mimic the sound/s for e.g.., slurping and sucking sounds.
  • Engage and experiment with clapping, finger clicking, stamping, knee patting, tongue clicking, and chest tapping -do any of these make similar sounds?

Instrument and sounds in the environment exploration:

  • If you have instruments, the children could explore the sound potential of instruments and share their discoveries for e.g., using a crow sounder instrument, crunching paper, rattles, rice shaker etc.

9. Reflecting back on the story:

The children, working collaboratively, create a soundscape or musical narration of aspects of the story for example,

  • What would the snail sound like as it moves over a bump on the forest floor? (heavy breathing that can happen going uphill/exercising).
  • What would a slug sound like if they are relaxing by a campfire?
  • What would the slug and snail sound like when the crow was near and/ or when they were sad, happy, excited etc. ?
  • What would the crow sound like as it talked to the slugs?

 Performance:

  • The children can perform their soundscape to each other.
